Year 15. How can it be ?
Autumn is always a season to savour with all its amazing colours and textures – and this year it also marks the birth of Scrufts, 15 years ago. What began as a five year plan until retirement has turned into a rather joyful journey. Fifteen years on, with four more dogs in the mix and at the age of 72, I’m still loving the process of creating handmade dog collars UK that customers adore.
A Rush of Creativity
Right now I’m fizzing with new ideas. My studio shelves are stacked with a glorious tangle of fabrics – Harris tweed dog collars and bright Liberty corduroys just waiting to be sewn up into something special. And then there’s the fabulous Freya, my muse and model. Her owner Kate takes such beautiful photos for me, and here is Freya showing off one of the several new Scrufts dog collars designs. A week of editing and uploading awaits ! With lots of autumnal dog walks and coffee in between …
The Challenges of Small Biz Life
Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Brexit cut off the European market, and now US import duties look set to make things difficult too. Small businesses like mine feel it most when customers are hit with fees they just don’t want. But all is not lost – Scrufts still has wonderful, waggy tailed fans in Canada and Australia.
Still Sewing After 15 Years
My work ethic is still as healthy as ever. I’ll keep stitching until I’m discovered Miss Haversham-style, slumped at my sewing machine, covered in fabric dust and surrounded by bespoke dog collars!
With love and appreciation to you all Bobbins xx
