We all love a dog friendly retreat where the hosts are brilliant and the surroundings are glorious and so I’m happy to introduce you all to my cousin’s beautiful house at Lombard Mill, nestling in a quiet wooded valley on a creek opposite the village of Fowey in Cornwall.
The two retreats are the one bedroom old Workshop cosily converted to provide a mezzanine sleeping area reached by a ladder, perched above a neat kitchen sitting room and bathroom and the terrace has a great view down the valley and sunsets are fairly spectacular from there.
The larger retreat in the Old Mill has two big double bedrooms and bathroom nestled in the roof, with a large open plan kitchen/diner, sitting room on the ground floor with the aged spindle for the mill wheel as a central feature. It is a fairly unique building as, on the ground floor, are not one, but TWO mill wheels! One day it will contain a yoga studio, but that’s on the to do list. The Mill recently hosted Dick Strawbridge from Escape to the Chateau, who spent a weekend cooking with his son James who lives in Fowey and the food looked amazing with all ingredients sourced from the many independent shops dotted around the immediate area.
The pretty fishing village of Fowey with its many shops, pubs and pasty emporiums is just across the estuary and there are two ferries that regularly make the crossing, so its nice and easy to get out and about. The pedestrian ferry runs from Polruan which is a 35-40 minute walk from The Mill where The Lugger will serve you with local beer and delicious food, or you can take the car via the Bodinnick Ferry which happens to tip you out at the best ice cream shop wittily called Game of Thrones!
South West Cornwall is brimming with fabulous coastal walks, but you can also access the north coast in about 45 mins and Perranporrth is a personal favourite destination, with its huge and dramatic sandy beach.
So, here’s the link you will need if you’re tempted by the delights on offer at Lombard Mill :
